What’s new
Apple TV’s April press release set the global debut for Aug. 5 with one episode, then weekly Wednesdays through Oct. 7. Deadline’s Aug. 3 schedule match lists 10 episodes on that cadence. ABC News reported Wednesday that the premiere episode was already streaming.
The season brings back Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, and Jeremy Swift. New cast includes Tanya Reynolds as coach Alice Chilton, plus Jude Mack, Faye Marsay, Rex Hayes, Aisling Sharkey, Abbie Hern, and Grant Feely. Jack Burditt joins as executive producer and showrunner under a new overall deal with Apple TV.
Why it came back
In a Variety interview published Aug. 5, co-creator Brendan Hunt said the England women’s national team, the Lionesses, and their 2022 UEFA Championship run helped push the writers toward a women’s-team storyline seeded at the end of Season 3. He said there is no firm multi-season plan beyond this installment, only “crossed fingers.”
Critical split
Early reviews are mixed. Variety called Season 4 more promising as a reboot than as a sequel, praising Reynolds while arguing the returning ensemble still crowds out new faces. IndieWire’s Ben Travers graded the season a C on premiere day, saying the return does little to justify Ted’s reversal of his Season 3 exit and that the show still struggles with tone and length.
