Tractor Supply Company said it will close approximately 75 underperforming Petsense by Tractor Supply stores after a review of the pet specialty chain, disclosing the plan with its second-quarter 2026 results.
Search interest for tractor supply is closing 75 underperforming petsense retail locations ranked No. 8 on the 28 Jul 2026 Google Trends pull as of 16:01 UTC, several days after Tractor Supply’s Q2 disclosure, while the company still had not named which Petsense stores will close.
On the July 23, 2026 earnings call, CEO Hal Lawton said the company decided to close the stores following a disciplined review of Petsense and expects the move to improve returns and free resources for higher-growth work. Fox Business reported that Lawton described the targeted locations as negative four-wall cash flow, meaning local sales were not covering store-level costs such as rent, labor, and inventory.
Tractor Supply’s corporate release and SEC-filed earnings exhibit said second-quarter results included a $5.9 million inventory write-down tied to the planned closures and $65.8 million in impairment and other charges for the Petsense business, largely from the restructuring. As of June 27, 2026, the company operated 209 Petsense stores in 23 states alongside 2,463 Tractor Supply stores in 49 states.
AL.com coverage syndicated on Yahoo Finance said the specific Petsense locations set for closure had not been announced. The same reporting noted Tractor Supply acquired Petsense in 2016 and is also trimming broader new-store expansion expectations, citing Retail TouchPoints coverage that the company now expects about 85 to 90 openings rather than 100.
Lawton told analysts the remaining Petsense footprint should be a stronger, profitable business inside Tractor Supply’s wider pet ecosystem, which also includes Allivet and VIP Petcare. CFO Kurt Barton said on the call, according to Fox Business, that repositioning Petsense should create a healthier chain that better complements Tractor Supply stores.
